John Marshall has achieved recognition as
‘The Cow Painter’; resulting from his devotion to this one subject over the
past ten years. In doing so he has created his own cow genre.

His highly sought after work proves enduringly popular at national art
fairs, has been the subject of solo exhibitions in London and Paris, and can
be found in collections across America and the rest of the world. He has
regularly exhibited with the Fairfax Gallery since 2000, who now act as his
exclusive representatives in London.
Recently he has taken his work into a grander scale – working on large
canvasses for maximum impact. Broadly painted in a fluid style, these
monumental paintings nevertheless reference the old masters in size and due
to the use of a traditional glazing technique which the artist admits has
been a ‘revelation’ in his working practices. In a recent article in the
Guardian newspaper, his work drew comparisons with George Stubb’s paintings
of horses; both reference an English tradition and have plain backgrounds;
which in Marshall’s case allows the artist to focus on drawing out the
individual characteristics of his bovine subjects to humorous, affectionate
and dramatic effect.
